NBA STREET SHOWDOWN ROSTER SERIES
NBA Hangtime was the last 2D game in the series and it looks outstanding even today. The sequel, NBA Showdown, moved the series to 3D, and with it, the control and feel of the game felt off and sloppier. You also had Reggie Miller doing his thing, and Hangtime featured a baby-faced rookie Kobe Bryant.

You have the Olajuwon and Drexler led Rockets, the Malone-Stockton Utah Jazz, the Patrick Ewing-lead Knicks, the David Robinson-lead spurs. Everyone else has hall of fame and legendary players. Unlike NBA Jam TE where there are some teams that just are absolute stinkers, the really only terrible team in Hangtime is the Clippers. No Michael Jordon of course, but it follows the 1996 roster otherwise which had so many legendary players. By the end of a campaign, if you knew your NBA history, you could have a monster player with maxed out stats.Īside from the create-a-player option, NBA Hangtime just outright had an insane roster. You'd get so many skill points you could assign to a number of attributes, and after every game there was a quiz segment where you could earn additional stat points to further level up your character. This custom player could access every characters heads including hidden characters, and were set up like an RPG character creator.

Firstly, this is the game where the "Build your own Character" portion of NBA Jam came from, instead of merely registering your name for stat tracking, you could also register a custom player to it. After NBA Jam TE (aka NBA Jam 2), there was an issue where Acclaim took ownership of the NBA Jam name while Midway, the company who actually made the games, went off and made their own sequel without the branding, NBA Hangtime.ĭespite being the third game in the series and not drastically different than what came before or after, the specific combination of things it does makes it so much better than any other game in the series. For those who never played it, NBA Hangtime is actually NBA Jam 3, by the original team.
